OUR STORY
Before there was a restaurant, there was Sambal.
Sambal began during the pandemic with a simple idea: cook the Indonesian food we missed and share it with Toronto. There was no dining room. Just a lockdown kitchen, delivery orders and a love for the dishes we grew up eating. And people showed up.
Then Toronto showed up.
What started online quickly became something bigger. Our food found its way to Indonesians looking for a taste of home and to people discovering Indonesian food for the first time. That response eventually brought Sambal out of the kitchen and into a pop-up in Mississauga, where we saw just how many people were ready for more Indonesian food.
Then we found The Danforth.
Today, Sambal has a permanent home in Toronto. We cook food inspired by the flavours we grew up with: familiar, comforting, unapologetically Indonesian and always better with other people around the table.
Sambal has changed a lot since those first delivery orders. The reason we started hasn't.
